When a luxury automotive brand wants to introduce a vehicle built around iconic arrivals, the conventional playbook calls for high-octane commercials and slick digital ads. Genesis Motor America chose a decidedly slower, more reflective path.

To coincide with the launch of a new SUV, the automaker commissioned director Maggie Gyllenhaal to create Flesh Impact, a 17-minute short film premiering at the Venice Film Festival. Starring Dakota Johnson and Ellen Burstyn as Marilyn Monroe across different eras of her life, the project elevates brand storytelling into genuine cultural participation.

What began as an AI video concept generated by agency Innocean quickly evolved into a fully realized tribute approved by Monroe’s estate, Authentic Brands Group. Rather than reducing an icon to a promotional backdrop, Genesis leaned into a narrative of prestige and artistic respect. CMO Amy Marentic acknowledges that while traditional funnel marketing remains essential, luxury positioning demands patience and broader cultural alignment.

This move underscores a growing shift in modern brand strategy. High-end brands are increasingly stepping into the role of cultural patrons, trading instant ROI for long-term resonance. By taking the festival circuit route before any public digital release, Genesis proves that true luxury isn’t just about selling a product, but creating moments worth waiting for.
